ExperimentalEvaluationofPosttensionedPrecast ConcreteCouplingBeams BradD.Weldon1andYahyaC.Kurama,M.ASCE2 Abstract:Thispaperdescribestheresultsfromeighthalf-scaleexperimentsofunbondedposttensionedprecastconcretecouplingbeams underreversed-cycliclateralloading.Eachtestspecimenincludesacouplingbeamandtheadjacentconcretewallpierregionsataoor level.Underlateralloads,thenonlineardisplacementsofunbondedposttensionedcouplingbeamsaregovernedbytheopeningofgaps atthebeam-to-walljoints.Steeltopandseatanglesareusedatthebeamendstoyieldandprovideenergydissipation.Thetestparameters includethebeamposttensioningtendonareaandinitialstress,initialbeamconcreteaxialstress,anglestrength,andbeamdepth.The resultsdemonstratethelateralstiffness,strength,andductilityofthecouplingbeamsundercyclicloading,withconsiderableenergy dissipationconcentratedintheangles.Itisshownthattheresidualdisplacementsofthestructureuponunloadingaresmallduetothe restoringeffectoftheposttensioningforce.Thesustainedchordrotationcapacitiesofthetestspecimensarecomparedwiththosefrom previoustestsofmonolithiccouplingbeams.
