Questionssuchasthese,whichareofgreatpracticalsignificanceinciviland miningengineering,areaddressedinthesenoteswhicharebasedonanumberofcase histories-eachcarefullychosentoillustratetheconceptsandpracticalapproaches used.Thetoolsandtechniquescoveredrangefromsimple‘backoftheenvelope’ estimatestothemostsophisticatednumericalmodelscurrentlyavailable.The discussionincludestheselectionofappropriateinputdata,useofsensitivitystudies andprobabilisticapproachesandtheiterativeuseofobservedperformancetocalibrate andrefinemodelsduringdesignandconstruction. Thesenoteshavebeenpreparedasmaterialtobeusedduringcoursesandalsoto provideareferencevolumeafterthecompletionofthecourses.Itisemphasisedthat thesearenotesandthatthevolumeisnotaformaltext.Ithasnotbeenandwillnotbe publishedinitspresentformandthecontentswillberevisedfromtimetotimetomeet theneedsofparticularaudiences.ThenoteswereupdatedandcorrectedinDecember 2000.
