1982 COMPARATIVESTUDYOFTHESEISMICPERFORMANCEOFFRAMESUSING DIFFERENTDISSIPATIVEBRACES AlfonsoVULCANO1AndFabioMAZZA2 SUMMARY Differentkindsofdissipativebracesandtheirmodelsaredescribed.Anumericalinvestigationis carriedoutconsideringthenonlinearseismicresponseofunbracedanddampedbracedframes. Moreprecisely,atypicalfive-storeyreinforcedconcrete(r.c.)frame,whichisdesignedaccording toEurocode8,isconsidered.Toprotecttheframe,thefollowingdissipativebracesaresupposed insertedintotheframeitself:cross-braceswithhysteretic(frictionoryielding)dampers,chevron braceswithviscoelasticdamper,diagonalbracewithviscousdamper.Theeffectsproducedbythe dissipativebracesontheresponseoftheframedstructureareevaluatedassumingdifferent propertiesoftheframemembers,bracesanddissipativedevices.Aspectsconcerningthebehaviour andmodellingofthedissipativebracesarediscussed. INTRODUCTION Theinsertionofdissipativebracesprovestobeeffectiveinordertoenhancetheperformanceofastructure designedaccordingtoconventionalaseismicdesigncriteria.Simplifieddesignprocedureswereproposed,which arebasedonthedesignspectrumconceptwithreferencetoasingle-degree-of-freedom(SDOF)
