1.Scope

1.1Thisspeci?cationcoverscastingsmadeofcompactedgraphiteiron,whichisdescribedascastironwiththegraphiteincompacted(vermiform)shapesandessentiallyfreeof?akegraphiteinthebulkofthecasting.

1.2Noprecisequantitativerelationshipcanbestatedbe-tweenthepropertiesofironinthevariouslocationsofthesamecastingandthoseofatestbarcastfromthesameiron(seeAppendixX1).

1.3ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Nootherunitsofmeasurementareincludedinthisstandard.

1.3.1Exception—Theinch-poundunitsinFigs.1-3andarestandard.SIunitsareaddedforinformationonly.

4.1Itistheintentofthisspeci?cationtosubordinatechemicalcompositiontomechanicalproperties;however,anychemicalrequirementmaybespeci?edbyagreementbetweenthemanufacturerandthepurchaser.5.Requirements

5.1Compactedgraphitecastironshallbeexaminedmetal-lographicallyfortheacceptablegraphiteformation.Nonde-structivetestingsuchasultrasonicvelocityorresonancefrequencymayalsobeusedtodeterminethegraphitenodu-larity.However,incasesofdispute,themetallographicexami-nationshallprevail.

5.2Themetallographicexaminationshallbeperformedonasamplesectionedfromthecasting,onaseparatelycasttestcoupon,asshowninFig.1,oronatestlugfromacasting.Thelocationonthecastingfromwhichthemetallographicspeci-menissectionedshallbeagreedbythemanufacturerandthepurchaser.Inthecaseofatestcouponortestlug,thespecimenshallrepresentthelastmetalfromthetreatedbatch.Thecastinglugdimensionandlocationshallbeagreedbymanu-facturerandpurchaser.

5.3Whencastingsareproducedtothisspeci?cationbytreatingtheironinthemoldforgraphiteformcontrol,themanufacturermayuseseparatelycasttestcouponsorcuttest
