This procedure defines methods to be ensured that the quality of drinking water is safe for consumption.
2. RESPONSIBLE PERSONS AND DUTIES
2.1 ZTK DOCTOR
? To test physical, biological and chemical properties from all water dispenser.
? To take the corrective action, in case the sample showed abnormal finding of the test.
? To share the result of non-potable water test with laboratory technician in order to
monitor the quality of the water form onshore public water supply.
? To collect non-potable water for Legionella bacterial test twice a year from potential
contaminated sources; tap water, emergency shower, emergency eye washer, etc.
2.2 PRODUCTION SECTION
? To notify medical officer to collect non-potable water for testing after receiving
supplementary water from supply Vessels.
Refer to Myanmar-1006-WI-080-ZTK-F-LOG-I-005 Potable Water Replenishment from
supply vessel and routine sampling.
? A laboratory technician has responsibility to collaborate with medical officer to combine
results, analysis and interpretation of water test.
2.3 MAINTAINANCE SECTION
? To collaborate with medical officer to take a remedial action in case there was abnormal
finding of water supply system, Reverse Osmosis System (RO)
2.4 LOGISTIC SECTION
?
Camp boss is responsible for deep cleaning those contaminated water dispenser or container, after been notified of abnormal finding of the water test from medical officer.
3. PROCEDURE
3.1 GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL QUALITIES
Sample collection procedures:
? Collect potable water from all water dispensers once a month.
? Collect non-potable water from main tank as per request. Normally when a vessel
supply transfer portable water to the ZPQ
? Both potable and non-potable water should be tested color, pH, nitrite, and
ammonia.
? For potable water, Coli-form bacteria’s testing has to be done. ZTK Doctor should be
collect sterilizing separately sample in Coli-form screening test bottle which will be
incubated for 24 hours.
3.2 PROCEDURE FOR RESPONDING TO “POSITIVE FINDING”
? Notify all personnel concerned; Field manager, Safety Officer, Logistic &Operations
Support supervisor, and Camp boss.
? Prohibit usage of water until the deep cleaning completed and the negative result
shown or the recollected sample.
? To do deep cleaning of water holding tank or dispenser by catering.

? Precautions should be observed during sampling. Avoid breathing aerosols that may
be contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Avoid generating aerosols or water mists
during sampling of the water system. Wear a respirator equipped with a HEPA
cartridge and nitrite gloves.
? Prepare or obtain sterile, screw-capped plastic or glass bottles for sampling. One
liter water sample is recommended for potable water sampling and 250 ml for non-
potable water sampling.
? For drinking or potable water, such as water fountains, faucets, and shower heads,
collect two samples if possible. Collect the "pre-flush or first draw" sample by
draining the first 1000 ml of water from the faucets or flush drains into a bottle. Allow
the water to run for approximately 60 seconds and collect the second draw of 1000
ml of water. Leave a one-inch air space on top of the water sample.
? The potential sources in ZAWTIKA field are collected from tap water, shower head,
emergency eyes washer, emergency shower, and HVAC system.
? After water sampling, swabs from showerheads emergency eye washer, emergency
showerhead should be taken, and looking for areas of Biofilm and take a swab
sample of the Biofilm. It should be provided sterile swabs for this purpose.
? For non-drinking or non-potable samples from such sources as tap water,
emergency shower and eyes washer, collect 250 ml water from the pre flush drain.
Leave a one-inch space on top of the sample. Record any biocide used in water
treatment when collecting non-drinking water. If sampling HVAC system, consider
taking a swab sample of any Biofilm.
? Label sample number on the bottle and record on the sample data sheet. Use a
distinctive number for each sample. Complete all sample information on a sample
data sheet for your own record. Send a copy with the samples to the laboratory.
See Appendix-3 Label sample for Sample Collection and Shipping for Legionella
? Tightly cap the bottles. Make sure that water does not leak during shipping and
transportation. Taping of bottle around the cap and neck with vinyl tape is
recommended.
? Place the samples in insulated boxes to protect specimens from extreme
temperature fluctuations in the summer months. NEVER USE ICE OR DRY ICE,
JUST KEEPS IN ROOM TEMPERATURE. Stuff the box with foam chips to cushion,
and seal the box securely for shipping. Send samples by express carrier in the same
day. Legionella bacteria surveillance should be done twice a year.

The interpretation of result and remedial action are based on latest available scientific data, as below:

CT/EC Action 1 Action 2 Action 3 Action 4
portable water
Action 2 Action 3 Action 4 Action 5

Action 3 Action 4 Action 5 Action 5
≥ 1000 Action 5 Action 5 Action 5 *colony forming units (CFU) of Legionella per milliliter *cooling tower/evaporative condenser
Action 1 Continue water sampling twice a year Action 2 Implement action 1
Review maintenance program recommended by the manufacturer of the equipment to ensure that’s the manufacturer’s recommended program be followed.
Action 3 Implement action 2
Conduct follow-up Legionellae analysis after a few weeks of evidence of further amplification.
Action 4 Implement action 3
Cleaning and/or biocide treatment of the equipment is indicated.
Action 5 Immediate cleaning and/or biocide treatment of the equipment is definitely
indicated. After cleaning and biocide treatment, it recommends re-collecting samples for Legionellae analysis to ensure effectiveness of the corrective action.
3.5 REPORTING
All water test results have to be recorded and sent to Field manager, Safety Officer, Logistic supervisor, Camp-boss. In case of root cause analysis, Field manager, Safety section, Logistic section, Production section, Maintenance section and Camp-boss should be involved to track down the root cause of the abnormal result
