Abstract:Thequantitativeresumptionofthepaleotectonicstressfieldinthesedimentarybasinhaslongbeenadifficultproblemduetotheshortageofthestresssymbols.Inordertoprobethefeasibilityofusingrockmagneticanisotropytoresumethedirectionofthemaximumprinciplestressofthepaleotec2tonicstressfieldinsedimentarybasin,anexperimenthasbeenmadeatfirsttoinvestigatethechangeofthemagneticanisotropybeforeandaftertherockisslowlypressurizedanddeformed.Aftertherockispressurized,themagneticanisotropyparametersofH,Pandqincreaseaccordingly,themaximumandtheminimumprincipalaxesofthemagneticsusceptibilityalsochangesignificantly,indicatingthatthetectonicdeformationprocessintheshallowformationmayexertobviousinfluencesontherockmagneticanisotropy.AcomparisonanalysisbetweenthedirectionofthemaximumprincipalcompressionstressdeterminedbytheminimumprincipalaxisofmagneticsusceptibilityandthatdeterminedbythetectonicdeformationanalysiswerethencarriedoutinthenorthernTarimBasin.Theresultsshowthatthetwoisroughlyconsistent,suggestingthat,intheareawithstronglydeformedstructures,itisfeasibletousethedirectionoftheminimumprincipleaxisofmagneticsusceptibilityindetermingthedirectionofthemaximumprincipalcompressionstressofthemagneticsusceptibilityofthepaleotectonicstressfieldinthesedimentarybasins.Atlast,somerelatedissuessuchastheapplicablescopeofthismethodandthestagedivisionofthetectonicstressfieldhavebeendiscussed.
