There are many ways in which a shopprimer if lefton the substrate may affect the performance of thelater coating system.The main issues include:
- Compatibility with subsequent coating system- Compatibility with the later service environment- Condition of the shopprimer
- Surface cleanliness and profile obtained at the initial blasting.
Compatibility with the subsequent coating system.A primary requirement if the shopprimer is to be leftfully or partly on the surface to be part of the latercoating system, is that the products are compatible- mainly in terms of adhesion but also in terms of wrinkling, blistering etc.
A zinc-silicate shopprimer cannot adhere to anepoxy shopprimer - an alkyd shopprimer may wrinkleif overcoated with epoxy, alkyd coatings may saponi-fy, if applied on zinc-containing shopprimers etc. Ageneral compatibility chart is given in table 1.
