Inthepresentinvestigation,turningexperimentswereperformedonTi-6Al-4Valloywithcoated(TiN,TiAlN)anduncoatedcuttingtoolinsertswithdifferenttexturedpatternsfabricatedontherakesurface.Performanceofcoatedanduncoatedtexturedtoolswereevaluatedusingmachinabilityandsurfacecharacteristicparameterssuchascuttingforces,microhardness,surfaceroughness,chipformationandtoolwear.Basedonthemachinabil-ityevaluation,acomparativestudywasalsomadetoidentitythebetterperformingtoolwhilemachiningofTi-6Al-4Valloy.ExperimentalresultsrevealedthatTiAlNcoatedperpendiculartexturedcuttinginsertsexhibitbet-termachinabilityinallaspectswhencomparedwiththeothertypeofinserts.

1.Introduction

Titaniumanditsalloysaremostlyusedinaerospaceenginecompo-nentsduetoitsexcellentpropertiessuchashighstrengthtoweightratio,goodcorrosionresistance,bettercreepresistance,toughness,du-rabilityhighstrengthattheelevatedtemperatures.However,therewerecertaindif?cultiesinmachiningoftitaniumalloysduetolowther-malconductivity,lowmodulusofelasticityandhighchemicalreactivity.Thusdecreasetheheatdissipationbetweenthetool-workinterfaces,in-creasethetoolwearandvibrationsonthemachinedsurface.Theabovedif?cultiesduringmachiningofTi-6Al-4Valloycanberesolvedbysur-facetexturingontherakefaceofuncoatedandcoatedtungstencarbideinserts[1–2].Surfacetexturingofcuttingtoolsplaysanimportantroleinreducingcuttingforces,frictionaleffectsandmaterialadhesiononthetool.KoshyandTovey[3]createdarealandlineartexturedpatternsontoolrakesurfacebyEDMandWEDMprocessesfortheturningof1045steeland6061aluminumalloyandconcludedthattheforcesonthefeeddirectionandcuttingdirectionwasreducedupto30%forthetexturedtoolwhencomparedwiththatofnon-texturedtool.Zeetal.[4]analyzedtheperformanceoftexturedpatternssuchasself-lubricat-ingtexturedtoolwithellipticalgroovesontherakeface(STT-R)andself-lubricatingtexturedtoolwithlineargroovesonthe?ankface(STT-F)withnon-texturedconventionaltoolsduringmachiningofTi-6Al-4Valloy.Itwasobservedthattexturedinsertsreducedthecutting
